In a press conference held on Tuesday, October 15, Douala city Mayor Dr. Roger Mbassa Ndine unveiled plans for the construction of a second bridge over the Wouri River. This ambitious project aims to alleviate chronic traffic congestion in the city.
The 10-kilometer bridge will connect Rond-point Deido in Douala 1 to Rond-point Maetur in Douala 5. The city council has allocated 41 billion francs CFA for the project, which is expected to take 16 months to complete. Once finished, the bridge will feature two lanes to accommodate vehicles of all sizes.
Mayor Ndine emphasized the bridge’s significance in improving the quality of life for Douala residents. « This project will not only reduce traffic congestion but also stimulate economic growth, » he stated. « We anticipate that the bridge will create new business opportunities and attract investment. »
The construction of the bridge will require the demolition of existing structures in the area. The city council has pledged to provide fair compensation to affected property owners. However, as of now, no formal land title documents have been submitted.
Work on the bridge is expected to begin in 2025. Upon completion, it will significantly enhance traffic flow and contribute to the overall development of Douala.
