The battery of human right lawyers and civil society actors, which constitute the network of human right defenders of central Africa (REDHAC) met with the press Tuesday October 29,to denounce torture and other cruel treatment metted on civilians using the Longue Longue case ,as a clear example.
The shocking video which stormed the social media last week of makossa Starboy Longkana Agno Simon popularly known as Longue Longue has left many tongues wagging 5 years , after the incident at the Semil littoral branch office.Owing to the fact that ,the government of cameroon is signatory to divide international conventions ranging from 1986,2009,2000 and 2002,all against torture, inhumane and degrading punishment but,it is rather unfortunate that 2 decades after, the Cameroonian military has vehemently refused to respect such measures. We are today talking about the Longue Longue story because of the video evidence put at the disposal of the world online but, before now we have had many others who survived the torture bullet like Junior Ngombe,Dr.Fridolin Nke,Mimi Mefo just to name this few as well as those who never lived to tell their story like Samuel Wazizi,Pauline Mayinga and many more.
It is in the face of this litany of atrocities,REDHAC has decided to put up a « Rule of law platform »destined to collect and examine files of torture and refer to the international organizations for perpetrators to be prosecuted.
It is therefore hope, this giant stride taken by REDHAC will send warning signal to force the state to abolish acts of torture,in its divise form in the country.
